Liberia has escalated concerns over foreign commentary on its internal affairs, with its Embassy in Abuja formally protesting remarks made by Nigerian cleric Elijah Babatunde Ayodele about the country’s leadership.
In a diplomatic communication dated June 8, the Embassy cautioned Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the cleric’s statements about President Joseph Nyuma Boakai could mislead public perception and risk damaging the long-standing relationship between the two nations.
Liberian officials noted that the remarks have already sparked reactions among citizens both within Liberia and in the diaspora, raising concerns about their potential impact on public confidence, national unity, and democratic stability.
The Embassy also pointed to what it described as a pattern of involvement by the cleric in Liberia’s political discourse, referencing similar statements made during the 2023 election period.
In light of these concerns, Liberia has called on Nigerian authorities to take the matter seriously and engage appropriate channels to review the situation, emphasizing the need to uphold mutual respect, diplomatic norms, and regional stability.
