Neglect Exposed as Floods Leave Dozens Homeless in Margibi Community

A severe flooding incident has displaced more than 50 households in the Israel Community, Margibi County District #1, exposing vulnerabilities in disaster preparedness and leaving families scrambling for survival.

Triggered by heavy rainfall and rising water levels, the flooding submerged large sections of the community, destroying homes, damaging property, and disrupting daily life. Entire households were forced to flee, many unable to salvage any of their belongings.

Community Chairman Prince Jallah Manyago confirmed that over 50 homes have been rendered uninhabitable, with affected residents now taking refuge with relatives and neighbors. While no fatalities were reported, the scale of displacement has created urgent humanitarian needs.

Victims are appealing to the National Disaster Management Team, humanitarian organizations, and the general public for immediate support. Among them is Jessica Kpingba, a single mother of two, who described the situation as dire, citing urgent needs for shelter, food, mattresses, clean water, clothing, and medical supplies.

The flooding has also disrupted education in the area. Arthur Klark, principal of a local elementary school, reported that instructional materials were destroyed, forcing a halt to academic activities. He called on the government to intervene quickly to restore normalcy.

Residents believe the disaster was worsened by the overflow of the Gbo River, which connects to the Clan River running through the community.

As families struggle to recover, the incident highlights broader concerns about infrastructure, environmental management, and the capacity to respond to natural disasters in vulnerable communities.
